Mutharamman: The Powerful Goddess of Devotion and Protection

Mutharamman is a revered goddess in Tamil Nadu, known for her immense power, compassion, and protective abilities. Situated in the village of Kulasekharapatnam, about 14 km from Thiruchendur, the 300-year-old Mutharamman Temple draws countless devotees seeking her blessings. Within the temple, the goddess Mutharamman and Swamy Gnanamoorthiswarar are enshrined together, receiving offerings from those seeking her guidance. A sacred neem tree, considered highly auspicious, also stands on the temple grounds.
The Legend of Mutharamman and Mahishasura
According to legend, Rishi Varamuni was once cursed by Sage Agastya, turning him into the demon Mahishasura, who terrorized the earth. In response, the Devas and sages prayed to Lord Shiva, who instructed them to worship Goddess Parvati for salvation. As a result, a divine child, Lalitambikai, was born through a sacred yaga (fire ritual).
Over the course of nine days, Lalitambikai grew into the powerful Parasakthi Lalitambikai and eventually defeated and killed Mahishasura on the tenth day. This day is celebrated as Dussehra, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, while the nine preceding days of her growth are celebrated as Navaratri. The legend explains why Mutharamman is seen as a fierce protector, capable of defeating even the most menacing forces.
Dussehra: A Grand Festival
This legendary victory over Mahishasura is celebrated every year in grand fashion during the Dussehra festival at Mutharamman Temple. The 10-day festival, held in August-September, is one of the temple’s most important events, attracting millions of devotees from across the region.
During the festival, devotees observe strict fasts and participate in rituals wearing elaborate costumes to honor the goddess. Many dress as Hindu gods and goddesses, including Kali, Gnanamoorthiswarar, and Mutharamman herself. The highlight of the festival is the dramatic reenactment of Mutharamman’s victory over Mahishasura, which takes place on the shores of Kulasekharapatnam. The celebration, attended by lakhs of people, symbolizes the eternal triumph of good over evil.
Devotional Practices
Beyond the annual festivities, devotees continuously seek Mutharamman’s blessings through everyday practices of devotion and prayer. Mutharamman is widely revered for her protective powers, with many believing that she responds swiftly to prayers. People suffering from diseases such as smallpox, chickenpox, paralysis, and mental health issues come to the temple seeking relief. Many also share stories of recovering lost wealth and overcoming financial hardships after praying to Mutharamman.
Devotees often follow specific vrathas (religious vows) to receive blessings and fulfill their prayers, reflecting their deep trust in Mutharamman’s ability to provide health, prosperity, and protection.
