The Art of Focus by Gauranga Das

1. Selfless Kindness

Love is about showing kindness and care towards others simply because you value their well-being without seeking any reward. It’s about putting other people’s happiness first and not expecting anything for yourself. This kind of love is all about helping others and making them feel good without thinking about what you might get in return.

In a story I read, a man begging on the street was approached by two people. The first, a wealthy individual, gave a large sum of money, more to show off his wealth and get attention than to truly assist the beggar. The second, lacking money and possessions, offered flowers instead. This gesture, giving flowers instead of money, was a true act of kindness. It showed he really wanted to help in a way he could.

2. Genuine Kindness

Happiness comes from managing desires, not always getting what we want. Too many wants can lead to temporary happiness and more wants, preventing lasting satisfaction. It’s not about giving up pleasure or ambition but about focusing on meaningful desires for long-lasting happiness and a fulfilling life.

In the past, our community had a big annual party with lots of people. One of the ladies attending the party kindly offered to bring homemade food that she prepared herself. She did this without expecting anything in return, showing that genuine happiness can come from doing selfless acts and focusing on what truly matters rather than just trying to gain something for oneself.

3. Lifelong Learning

Life is a journey of growth and change. We become better through experiences and challenges, constantly learning and gaining wisdom. Our goal is self-improvement as we let go of the old and embrace the improved aspects of ourselves shaped by life’s unique journey.

I read an article on Medium about the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The author, while wearing kimonos, learned to sit comfortably on the floor with her legs crossed, even though she initially faced challenges related to her age. Through dedicated practice, she overcame these challenges. It reminded me that in life’s journey of growth and change, patience and practice can make anything possible, regardless of age.

4. Collaborative Solution

To make peace efforts work, it’s important that everyone involved really wants to find a solution and believes it’s possible. If they don’t, then even the best methods won’t help much. Success in solving conflicts mostly depends on how ready and open the people involved are to solve the problem.

I’m a vegetarian, and my husband eats fish. I don’t like cooking fish, so we had an agreement: my husband cooks the fish, and in exchange, I clean the kitchen afterward, which usually gets messy from his cooking. I find this to be a fair deal. This compromise in our dietary preferences illustrates how effective solutions can be reached when both parties contribute positively to resolving a conflict.

5. Unspoken Support

Small acts of kindness, like offering help or simply listening, greatly enhance our daily lives. These actions create a ripple effect of positivity, strengthening connections between people and enriching our collective experience of life.

Once, I made cheese gravy using chunks of cheese. It didn’t cook properly, and the cheese turned out to be hard to eat and swallow. My husband, noticing this, chose not to say anything about the dish. Seeing his reaction, I understood that he didn’t like it, but his decision not to comment demonstrated kindness and consideration for my effort.

Though not an expert, these lessons have shaped my growth and empathy. I welcome your thoughts and look forward to growing together.

Your engagement till the end is truly appreciated. Until next time, stay well and keep learning.
